I figured I start my first post off with something I enjoy and that’s the little things. One of my favorite little things that I own is my Pelican memory card case. As any solid state camera user knows that the most important thing to do during a shoot is to make sure your footage is safe and sound. Keeping my cards in the Pelican case is a nice piece of mind.

I first saw these puppies when I was out in California working for Philip Bloom, testing cameras for Lucas Films. Once I started fiddling with Philip’s memory case is clear why he stored his cards in there. Like most Pelican products it feels remarkably solid, and the latch is plenty strong but not to much of a pain to actually open. It really feels indestructible, maybe bulletproof?

Bulletproof?

Inside the case the camera has soft rubber molding in which the CF cards fit (They have other models that fit all types of cards). The rubber provides some shock absorbency for the cards, another nice little feature. They stay in place quite well.

Pelican claims that they are Water-Resistant. I can say that they could definitely be rained on all day and the cards will be as dry as a feather. But I was curious if they were truly water proof. So I got all scientific and filled my Bathroom sink with water, got my case, locked it up and threw it in there.

And we have flotation!

It floats! In order to submerge the case I had to hold it down. I held it under for about 30 seconds. It still floated to the top after holding it under. Meaning the seal was air tight. Very nice! When opening it up I realized it was slightly harder to open. I’m know engineer, although I have played one on TV (that’s not true) I’m assuming the water probably made the seal like a vacuum and made it even tighter. Who knew a memory case could be so much fun?

Dry as a feather

I inspected the inside of the case vigorously, and no drop of water could be found. Water-proof? Yes.

These cases cost $20 and I can’t help but think that it was one of my best purchases. Get one. You won’t regret it.
