For the better part of four years I’ve been editing the majority of my own films off my iMac and MacBook pro. As many of you know working with HD footage can eat up memory and hard drive space. I edit off of external hard drives (of course) but sometimes programs will stash massive render files or make duplicate files on your hard drive without you even realizing it. Within a year of owning my iMac it was constantly running low on disk space which I found peculiar since I put just about everything on my externals. Those of you who edit with FCP know that this can cause serious problems when exporting out massive files.

love the graphic to display the amount of space taken up

So I searched around for a mac based software that would help me locate these massive files. I did try searching through the hard drive but there were so many folders and sub-folders I was afraid of deleting files that might be vital to the software. After much wandering about the internet I stumbled on to this little program called Disk Inventory X. The program analyzes your internal hard drive, or if you want it cant an external hard drive as well. After this step it presents the files into different groupings on a large graphic to get a visual sense of what percentage of space is being taken up. I love this feature, makes it much easier to see then to look at a hundred different percentages. So basically it works quite well for stupid people like myself.

Intial page where you can choose which drive you want the program to analyze

You can click on the squares, it’ll show you all the information about each file and show you exactly where they exist so you can delete them or coexist in harmony! I prefer the first.

Best of all, this program is FREE!! For the quality of this program is quite a rewarding surprise! You want to download the file Disk Inventory X 1.0. As far as I know this program is only for macs. If you wish to download it click HERE to go to the download page. Happy Deleting!
