Yeah I wanted this thing really bad when they announced it at NAB. But after just watching their newest preview (doesn’t it seem quite Appleish) of their microRemote I REALLY want one. This system has the ability to use an iPhone or an iTouch as an interface with the remote system. It shows you the range of depth of field that certain lenses have at certain apertures. When using the microTape it gives you a mark to show you where to adjust too. There’s even an autofocus button that automatically adjusts to the reading the microTape is showing. Crazy. But I personally would find it much more fun to pull focus myself.

*drool*

One of the craziest elements about this whole rig is the price point. It’s base model is $1000. That price doesn’t include the whole kit and Redrock isn’t being exactly clear what is included in that price range. I do know that it does NOT include the focus motor and the microTape. So using my college education and process of elimination I concur that it includes the base station (which is the bridge between the remote and focus motor) and the remote it self.

One thing that I hadn’t seen before was that little focus knob deal that attaches to a handle. That would be a great feature for run and gun or those shooting handheld without a focus puller. The idea of using the iPhone with remote system is genius. They definitely helped future proof the unit by allowing it to easily be updated through a simple software download. Just make sure to put your phone on airplane mode when pullin!

small and compact

I really can’t wait for to get my hands on this unit. I shoot quite a bit of locations in low light interiors with steadicams and this unit is going to become a staple for those shoots. With the unit being as small as it is I tend to put it in small locations or tight corners and can get quite  cramped with you and your 1st AC so this also helps freeing up a little movement by haing one less hand on the unit itself. Can’t wait to get my mits on this sucker!

It'll be awesome to finally have a missile launcher on my 7d!

Great little Demo video from NAB going over the features of the microRemote
